Films with Shooting Stars in Venice

At the Venice Film Festival (until sept. 11th), several Shooting Stars are represented with films in different sections:

Michele Riondino, this years' Shooting Star for Italy, in Competition with Noi Credevamo directed by Mario Martone.

Alba Caterina Rohrwacher (Shooting Star 2009) can be seen in two productions, in Competition with The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine dei Numeri Primi) directed by Saverio Costanzo and in the Fuori Concorso section with Sorelle Mai by Marco Bellocchio.

Belgish Shooting Star of 2002, Jérémie Renier can be seen in Competition in Francois Ozon's Potiche alongside Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu.

The Fuori Concorso section sees Moritz Bleibtreu (Germany 1999) in Vallanzasca - Gli Angeli del Male by Michele Placido as well as Leonor Watling (Spain 1999) in Lope by Andrucha Waddington, and Klara Issa (Czech Republic 2007) in Surviving Life (Prezit Svuj Život) by Jan Švankmajer.

Rooney Mara cast opposite Daniel Craig

Lina Todd, member of the ICDN, had an eye for the upcoming talent in choosing Rooney Mara as Rising Star in 2009. Three American up-and-coming actors were presented together with their European counterparts, 3 out of the 10 Shooting Stars 2009, as part of the Breakthrough Performers programme at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2009.
At the moment, Rooney Mara has got the role of Lisbeth Salandar in David Fincher's studio remake of GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO opposite Daniel Craig.

Thure Lindhardt starring opposite Laetitia Casta

Thure Lindhardt (Flame and Citron, Brotherhood), will play the part of the boyfriend of French actress-model Laetitia Casta in Kamen Kalev's THE ISLAND.
The story of couple looking for some peaceful days is located on a Bulgarian island off the Black Sea coast.
Director Kamen Kalev, who is also active as producer with his company Waterfront Film, represented Bulgaria this year as Producer on the Move in Cannes.

Best Actress Amanda for Agnieszka Grochowska

Agnieszka Grochowska, Polish Shooting Star 2007, won the Best Actress award for her role in Upperdog. The film also received the Amada for Best Norwegian Film, Best Director Sara Johnsen, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Upperdog is produced by Asle Vatn, Norwegian Producer on the Move 2010 in co-production with Riva Film.

The Amanda Awards, for the best domestic films released in Norwegian cinemas during the film year 2009-2010 (Norwegian Oscar), were presented on August 20, 2010 in Haugesund on the occasion of the Norwegian International Film Festival (August 21-26).

German actress Maria Simon as commissioner

German actress Maria Simon will be next commissioner in 'Polizeiruf 110' of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. Shooting for her first appearance in the tv-series will start in september and is set for release next year. Maria is well known for Distant Lights (Hans-Christian Schmid) and The Countess (Julie Delpy) and on tv screen present in several crime and drama productions. She represented Germany as Shooting Star in 2004.

New films with Daniel Brühl, Cécile de France, Jérémie Renier

German actor Daniel Brühl (John Rabe, Inglorious Basterds) has the lead for DER GANZ GROßE TRAUM DES KONRAD KOCH, directed by Sebastian Grobler, about a British teacher who brought soccer to Germany in the 1870s.

In the French/Belgian/Italian co-production DELIVREZ-MOI by the brothers Dardenne, Cécile de France and Jérémie Renier are currently performing the leads. It's the third time for Jérémie to work with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne following The Child (2005) and The Silence of Lorna (2008).

The actors were all participants in the Shooting Stars project, Daniel Brühl for Germany and Cécile for France for France in 2003, Jérémie Renier for Belgium in 2002.

Awards for Italian Shooting Stars

Michele Riondino, Shooting Star for Italy this year, won the national actor award at the "Rodolfo Valentino awards". The 'Premio Internationale del Cinema' was given for the 33th time, in Quatu/Sardinia, this year to Meryl Streep and Andia Garcia.
In addition, Michele was awarded as talent of the "Giffoni Experience" (together with Susan Sarandon and others). The Jury consists of 3000 kids from 3 to 23 years from 43 Countries and 150 Italian cities.

Alba Caterina Rohrwacher, Italy's Shooting Star 2009, is the winner of the Ciak d'Oro (Golden Ciak) 2010 as Best Actress for What More do I Want (Cosa Voglio di Piu) by Silvio Soldini.
Riccardo Scamarcio, Shooting Star for Italy in 2006, won the Ciak d'Oro as Best Actor for Loose Cannons (Mine Vaganti) by Ferzan Ozpetek.

The Ciak d'Oro as Best Producer went to Simone Bachini, Italy's Producer on the Move 2010, for The Man Who Will Come (featuring Alba Caterina Rohrwacher).

Brad Pitt pitches August Diehl

Brad Pitt recommended his film buddy from Inglorious Basterds, August Diehl, as husband of his wife Angelina Jolie. Director Phillip Noyce was looking for a new, fresh face playing the part of the husband of Angelina Jolie in his thriller SALT. According to NBC's PopCornBiz blog, Pitt praised Diehl as a strong character and advised Noyce to watch out for him, who finally casted Diehl. SALT is out in the US cinemas and is set for release in German cinemas on August 26th.

THE CONCERT with Mélanie Laurent in cinemas

Mélanie Laurent, Shooting Star for France 2007, can be seen in UK and German cinemas in the co-production THE CONCERT by Radu Mihaileanu. The film was awarded at this years Cesar Awards 'Best Music written for a film' and is currently in UK cinemas, and opens in Germany at july 29.

Dutch actress LOTTE VERBEEK to star in drama series

The Dutch actress Lotte Verbeek, together with Oscar winning actor Jeremy Irons, will play in the historical drama series THE BORGIAS. THE BORGIAS will be directed by Oscar winning director Neil Jordan.

Lotte became well known by her beautiful role in the film Nothing Personal. She was honoured with many international distinctions. This year LOTTE VERBEEK made a striking appearance during the Berlin International Film Festival where she was the Dutch Shooting Star. The filming of THE BORGIAS will take place in Hungary and lasts till the end of this year.

Moritz Bleibtreu shoots in Hamburg

German actors Moritz Bleibtreu, Mario Adorf, Dominique Horwitz and Wotan Wilke Möhring are heading to the Millerntorstadion in Hamburg. Until August 14, they are performing in the new feature GEGENGERADE - NIEMAND SIEGT AM MILLERNTOR, directed and produced by Tarek Ehlail, about the soccer team of FC St. Pauli and their fans. Feature is set for release in 2011. Bleibtreu was chosen as German Shooting Star in 1999.

Anais Demoustier awarded Best Actress for SWEET EVIL

French Shooting Star 2010, Anaďs Demoustier, was awarded Best Actress at the 45th Karlovy Vary IFF. Anaďs plays the role of Céline in Olivier Coussemacq's SWEET EVIL (L'ENFANCE DU MAL, 2009), a fifteen year-old girl constantly on the move since her mother's imprisonment.
The festival in Karlovy Vary is still regarded as one of the most influential and renowned film events in Central and Eastern Europe and famous for an enthusiastic audience (see information here).

Andrew Garfield will be SPIDER MAN

The new SPIDER MAN will be performed by Andrew Garfield. The UK actor had been chosen for SHOOTING STARS in 2008, but unfortunately couldn't take part due to unforeseen circumstances (see information).
The 4th episode of SPIDER MAN will be directed by Marc Webb in 3D and is set for release in 2012. Webb is convinced by the extraordinary talent of Garfield, who will lead the role of Peter Parker into the future.
Garfield can be seen later this year opposite Carey Mulligan, UK Shooting Star 2009, in Mark Romanek’s NEVER LET ME GO.

SHOOTING STARS nominated for Best Actress Amanda

Agnieszka Grochowska, Polish Shooting Star 2007, is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Upperdog. The film, directed by Sara Johnsen, is produced by Asle Vatn, Norwegian Producer on the Move 2010.

Norwegian Shooting Star 2002, Maria Bonnevie, is nominated for Best Actress in Margreth Olin's debut feature The Angel.

The Amanda Awards, for the best domestic films released in Norwegian cinemas during the film year 2009-2010 (Norwegian Oscar), will see 21 films competing in 17 categories. The Ceremony will take place on August 20, 2010 in Haugesund before the opening of the Norwegian International Film Festival (August 21-26).

David Kross in new Spielberg film

German Shooting Star 2009, David Kross, was chosen for Steven Spielberg's new film WAR HORSE. The project is planned to be shot in in August.

The film is based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo about the horror of the First World War. WAR HORSE is scheduled to open in US theatres next summer.

Elena Anaya starring in new Pedro Almodóvar film

Spanish Shooting Star of 2004, Elena Anaya, is announced as lead to La Piel Que Habito by Pedro Almodóvar, who in the first place suggested Penelope Cruz starring opposite Antonio Banderas. Anaya's lead shows similarities to the role which Almodóvar initially imagined for Cruz. The film is based on a novel by Thierry Jonquet and is scheduled for shooting in August.

Elio Germano honoured in Cannes

This Sunday Italian Shooting Star Elio Germano (2008) received the award as Best Actor at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival for his role in La Nostra Vita (Our Life) directed by Daniele Luchetti. He shares the award with his colleague Javier Bardem who was honoured for his role in Biutiful directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

Edward Hogg wins Chopard

Last night the 2010 British Shooting Star Edward Hogg received the Chopard Trophy for Best Male Newcomer at the Hotel Martinez during the 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival. Previous winners include Shooting Star Ludivine Sagnier (France, 2001) and David Kross (Germany, 2009).

Walking the red carpet today with Shia LaBeouf, Michael Douglas, Josh Brolin and director Oliver Stone, Carey Mulligan (UK Shooting Star 2009) is again in the spotlight of the film business with Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The sequel of the original Wall Street was screened Out of Competition and was highly attended by press and industrie.

EFP presents Europe's best young actors in Denmark

Selected as the cream of Europe's acting talent, a group of eight SHOOTING STARS 2010 will be spotlighted with their films at the CPH PIX Film Festival in Copenhagen between April 23-25. George Clooney and SHOOTING STARS

The new film of Anton Corbijn, THE AMERICAN, sees main lead actor George Clooney accompanied by three Shooting Stars: Irina Björklund (Finland 2004) plays Ingrid, the one he loves; Thekla Reuten (The Netherlands 2004, IN BRUGES by Martin McDonagh) as Mathilde has an important lead, and also part of the cast is Samuli Vauramo (Finland 2009). The cast was suggested by Beatrice Kruger, member of the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN), to Corbijn, who won two British Independent Film Awards for his first feature CONTROL.

Gopo Best Actor for Dragos Bucur

Dragoş Bucur, Romanian Shooting Star 2010, won the Gopo as Best Actor for Police, Adjective by Corneliu Porumboiu.
At last night's Gopo Awards ceremony, held in the country's Palace of Parliament, the tale about the moral dilemma of a small-town policeman won another five of Romania's top film industry prize (Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematographer). At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Police, Adjective won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize.

Carey Mulligan nominated for Academy Award Best Actress

UK Shooting Star 2009, Carey Mulligan, is again in spotlight of attention for her outstanding performance in Lone Scherfig's An Education. Yesterday the list of nominations was published and Carey is on the run with Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock. The film An Education also is nominated in the categories Best Picture and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). The Award Ceremony takes place on march 7 in Los Angeles.

Casting Seminars during Berlinale

Shooting starts for THE SOLITUDE OF PRIME NUMBERS

SHOOTING STAR Alba Caterina Rohrwacher (Italy 2009) will feature in Saverio Costanzo’s new film THE SOLITUDE OF PRIME NUMBERS alongside acclaimed actors such as Isabella Rossellini and the young theatre performer Luca Marinelli. The film is an adaptation of Paolo Giordano's novel of the same title. Shooting kicked of two days ago and will take place in Rome and Turin. The film is planned to get released at the end of 2010.

SHOOTING STARS at Scanorama

Two of Europe's best young actors are presented with their latest films from November 5-7 at the European Film Forum Scanorama in Vilnius/Lithuania. Cyron Melville from Denmark talks about LOVE AND RAGE (VANVITTIG FORELSKET) and the Swiss actress Celine Bolomey presents her latest film THE NOISE IN MY HEAD (DU BRUIT DANS LA TĘTE).

With the Touring Shooting Stars Programme at the fifth edition of the European Film Forum Scanorama in Vilnius, EFP gives the young actors exposure to the press and local audiences in this year's European Capital of Culture.

Elio Germano plays alongside Bruno Ganz

Italian Shooting Star 2008 Elio Germano plays alongside Bruno Ganz in DAS ENDE IST MEIN ANFANG by director Jo Baier. Elio plays Folco, the son of Tiziano Terzani, the long-time SPIEGEL-magazine correspondent for Asia. Tiziano, played by Bruno Ganz, suffers from cancer and wants to use his remaining lifetime to tell his son the stories of his life and experiences between Europe and Asia.

Release is planned in autumn 2010.

BROTHERHOOD wins Top Award at Rome

The jury of the International Film Festival Rome emphasized Thure Lindhardt's and David Dencik's (Danish SHOOTING STARS 2000 and 2007) outstanding performance in Nicolo Donato's feature-length debut BROTHERHOOD.

Last Sunday the film won the festival's Golden Marc'Aurelio Jury Award in Rome.

SHOOTING STARS at the Hamptons International Film Festival

Three of EFP's SHOOTING STARS 2009 are being spotlighted at The Hamptons International Film Festival in the USA (October 8–12, 2009).  At the HIFF they get the chance to present their latest films to American public, press and film industry. Samuli Vauramo (Finland) talks about his film TEARS OF APRIL, Cyron Melville (Denmark) will be in the US with LOVE AND RAGE and Alba Caterina Rohrwacher (Italy) presents DUE PARTITE.

The Touring SHOOTING STARS Programme at HIFF, created as a follow-up to the presentation of SHOOTING STARS in Berlin, includes besides the film screenings meetings with participants of the industry as well as gatherings between the SHOOTING STARS and their counterparts from the USA.

SHOOTING STARS On Tour: Arrival in New York

Europe's best young actors on tour in New York: Alba Caterina Rohrwacher (Italy), Cyron Melville (Denmark) and Samuli Vauramo (Finland), three of EFP's 2009 SHOOTING STARS, have arrived in New York to meet Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand as well as Laura Munsterhjlem and the US-Casting Directors David Vaccari, Avy Kaufmann and Ellen Lewis.

At a round table meeting they are discussing international options for Europe's acting talent. On friday the three SHOOTING STARS continue their tour to present their latest films at the Hampton's International Film Festival.

Sara Forestier shooting LE NOM DES GENS

Sara Forestier (SHOOTING STAR 2005) is currently shooting LE NOM DES GENS (“People's Names”), the second feature by Michel Leclerc. The French actress portrays a left-wing activist, who sleeps with her political opponents to convert them to her cause. Her strategy works out, until she meets Arthur Martin (played by Jacques Gamblin).

German Casting Award goes to Nina Haun

The newest member of The International Casting Director's Network (ICDN), Nina Haun, wins the German Casting Award for the cast of five feature films (cinema and TV productions), among them HILDE by Kai Wessel and EVERYONE ELSE by Maren Ade. The award is endowed with prize money of 10.000 euros and will be presented within the Cologne Conference on October 3rd.

WOMEN WITHOUT MEN with Orsi Tóth wins in Venice

Shirin Neshat's directorial debut WOMEN WITHOUT MEN with Hungarian Shooting Star 2009, Orsi Tóth, has been awarded with the Silver Lion for Best Director at this year's Venice Film Festival. Tóth portrays the life of a young prostitute in Iranian society.

Norwegian Film Award for Aksel Hennie

Aksel Hennie, Norwegian SHOOTING STAR 2004, won the Amanda Award as Best Actor for his performance in MAX MANUS at this year's Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund. With a total of 7 wins, the film by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rřnning was the most sucessful movie in competition.

SHOOTING STARS 2009 starring in films at Toronto

Five of EFP's 2009 Shooting Stars will star in films selected at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival (10- 17 September 2009), one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world and a strong supporter of quality European cinema. The Shooting Stars featuring in films are Germany's David Kross in SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT (by Detlev Buck), British actress Carey Mulligan in AN EDUCATION (by Lone Scherfig), Italian award winner Alba Caterina Rohrwacher in I AM LOVE (by Luca Guadagnino), Hungarian newcomer Orsi Tóth in WOMEN WITHOUT MEN (by Shirin Neshat) and LOURDES (by Jessica Hausner) and Verónica Echegui from Spain in BUNNY & THE BULL (by Paul King).

Theatrical Release of TEARS OF APRIL

On September 1st, 2009 Aku Louhimies' new film TEARS OF APRIL will receive its German theatrical premiere in the cinema CENTRAL in Berlin. The Finnish Shooting Star 2009, Samuli Vauramo (lead role), will be present at the premiere alongside the director himself. The film can be seen on the big screen from September 3rd, 2009.

Shooting Star Ludivine Sagnier (France 2001) will feature in Fabienne Berthaud’s film BARE FEET ON SLUGS alongside acclaimed actors such as Diane Kruger, Brigitte Catillon and Jean-Pierre Martins. Shooting will start in the middle of August in France and the film is planned to get released in spring 2010.

Anamaria Marinca joins jury in Sarajevo

Anamaria Marinca, Romanian Shooting Star 2008, joins the Feature Competition Jury of the 15th Sarajevo Film Festival (August 12th – 20th, 2009). During the festival Anamaria will also star in Hans Christian Schmid's film STORM and the movie FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN by Oliver Hirschbiegel.

Master Class with Nancy Bishop

Elio Germano guest of honor in Portugal

Elio Germano, Italy’s Shooting Star 2008, will attend the 8 1/2 Festa do Cinema Italiano in Portugal (April 2-9, 2009) as guest of honor.
Germano will introduce two of his most recent films which have not been released yet in Portugal: Daniele Vicari's THE PAST IS A FOREIGN LAND (opening film) and A WHOLE LIFE AHEAD by Paolo Virzě.

Adolf-Grimme-Awards for Maria Popistaşu and Hannah Herzsprung

Maria Popistaşu (Romanian SHOOTING STAR 2007), and Hannah Herzsprung (German SHOOTING STAR 2008) are among the winners of the 45th Adolf-Grimme-Awards.

In the category fiction, an Adolf-Grimme-Prize goes to Life Actually (Das wahre Leben, dir. by Alain Gsponer) starring Hannah Herzsprung  (German Shooting Star 2008) and Katja Riemann. Read the jury's comment here (in German)

Hans Steinbichler's My Mother, my Bride, and I (Die zweite Frau) receives an award, honouring also the main cast Maria Popistaşu (Romanian Shooting Star 2007) and Matthias Brandt. Jury's comment (in German).

The "Adolf-Grimme-Preis" is considered the most renowned award for high-quality television in Germany. The ceremony will be held on 3 April 2009 in Marl.

Lana Veenker (ICDN) - new casting projects

Lana Veenker, member of the International Casting Directors Network recently completed casting on "The Untitled Crowley Project" for CBS Films, starring Harrison Ford. She is currently casting "Leverage", a television drama series for TNT, starring Timothy Hutton.

"The Untitled Crowley Project" is inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life-threatening disease. Directed by Tom Vaughan (“What Happens in Vegas”), stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Stonehill, a brilliant but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, and Brendan Fraser as John Crowley.

"Leverage" is a thrilling, fast-paced drama series starring Oscar® winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People). Hutton stars as Nate Ford, a former insurance investigator determined to bring down the kind of corrupt bigwigs whose neglect led to the death of his son.  Executive-produced by Dean Devlin (Independence Day, TNT’s The Librarian movies), the series scored big in its first season, ranking as ad-supported cable’s #1 show in its timeslot.

Johanna Wokalek nominated as "Best Actress" at the German Film Prize 2009

Johanna Wokalek, German Shooting Star 2006, is nominated as "Best Actress" for her performance as Gudrun Ensslin in Uli Edel’s feature THE BAADER MEINHOF KOMPLEX at the German Film Prize in 2009. The film is nominated for 4 Lolas, including "Best Feature" for producer Bernd Eichinger.

New York selects film with SHOOTING STARS

The Tribeca Film Festival in New York chose the Danish-Swedish co-production ORIGINAL for this year's Discovery section, starring two Shooting Stars: Tuva Novotny (Sweden, 2002) and David Dencik (Denmark, 2007). The film, set in Malmö and Copenhagen, is co-written and directed by Denmark's Alexander Brřndsted and Sweden's Antonio Tublén. The Swedish distributor is Nordisk Film.

Swiss Shooting Star 2009, Celine Bolomey, was honoured at this year's Swiss Film Prize. For her leading role in the film DU BRUIT DANS LA TĘTE by Vincent Pluss she was awarded the QUARTZ, Swiss Film Prize 2009, as "Best Actress".

Anamaria Marinca "Best Actress"

At this year's Gopo Awards, the national Academy Awards in Romania, Anamaria Marinca won the Gopo for "Best Actress" for her outstanding performance in "Boogie" by Radu Muntean. The film was also awarded with "Best Director" for the work of Radu Muntean on the realist portrayal of young men reluctantly letting go of their wild years. Anamaria Marinca was Romania's Shooting Star in 2008.

Hafsia Herzi

French Shooting Star 2009, Hafsia Herzi will performe in “Ma Campagne de Nuit” opposite French actress Emmanuelle Beart. The film will be directed by Helen Lauren and Isabelle Brockard and produced by Edouard Mauriat’s Mille et Une Productions. Filming is set to start in the summer.

Herzi is also cast for a future project of Xavier de Choudens opposite Jacques Dutronc.

Lana Veenker (ICDN) new projects

Lana Veenker (ICDN) is currently working on the "Untitled Crowley Project" starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, directed by Tom Vaughan ("What Happens in Vegas") and produced by CBS Films.

She also just completed casting on "Rid of Me," an independent feature by up-and-coming director James Westby ("The Auteur", "Film Geek"), starring Theresa Russell, Art Alexakis of Everclear, and Storm Large of Storm & the Balls.

Birgit Minichmayr

At this year's Berlinale, Birgit Minichmayr won the Silver Bear for "Best Actress" for her outstanding performance in "Everyone Else" by Maren Ade. In Berlin she also starred in "The Bone Man" by Wolfgang Murnberger, which was screened in the Panorama section. Birgit Minichmayr was EFP's Austrian SHOOTING STAR in 2001. She is a member of the Burgtheater ensemble in Vienna.

Patricia Vasconcelos (ICDN) member of Shooting Stars Jury

Casting Director and member of the Shooting Stars jury Patricia Vasconcelos (ICDN) will work on the new Raul Ruiz project "Misterios de Lisboa". The casting will start in April 2009. Se will also cooperate with Antonio Pedro Vasconcelos' project "Fama". The casting has already started. Shooting is planned to take place in July in Lisboa.

David Kross hits for the Oscars

After the great experience and the whirlwind week of events, awards and press activities at the Berlin International Festival, David Kross hits for the Oscars! For his appearance in "The Reader" he will attend the ceremony in Los Angeles in the entourage of actress Kate Winslet and director Stephen Daldry. "The Reader" is nominated in 5 categories. He will also attend the premiere of the film in Essen on February 25, 2009.

Robert award for Jakob Cedergren

Jakob Cedergren, Danish Shooting Star 2005, won the Danish Film Academy's Robert Award for 'Best Leading Actor' in Terribly Happy by Henrik Ruben Genz.

The film, produced by Thomas Gammeltoft, who was selected for EFP's project Producers on the Move in 2004, was honoured with seven awards, including 'Best Feature Film', on Sunday, February 1, at the ceremony in Copenhagen.

The Robert is the film industry's award, presented annually since 1984 by the Danish Film Academy.
